NERVE (Neurosurgery Education and Research Virtual Experience Group) is a national virtual interest group designed to help supplement medical school, by providing a multi-institutional forum for shared objective mentorship. We have a particular focus on disadvantaged students. Our goal is to accomplish this by focusing on five competency domains: (1) Research Skills and Scholarly Activity, (2) Clinical Knowledge, (3) Professional Development, (4) Technological Literacy and Resource Management, and (5) Technical Skills.
Requirements: Must be a medical student enrolled in a United States Medical School (MD or DO) with an active and demonstrated interest in neurosurgery, neurology, neuroscience, and/or psychiatry with the desire and determination to create and pursue a research project, in addition to collaboration amongst other NERVE members and mentors. Demonstrating an ability to meet 2 times per month for meetings, meet deadlines, show initiative, lead and attend journal clubs, and aid fellow NERVE members is required. The NERVE academic calendar year will start September 1st, 2023 and end June 30, 2024. Submitting an abstract to the MSNTC Early Career Neuroscience Virtual Research Symposium will be required and submitting at least one paper or abstract to a journal will be expected.
Preferences: All are welcome to apply, provided they meet the above requirements. Preference will be given to students interested in neurosurgery/neurology/neuroscience/psychiatry, those who do not have a home program and/or an American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) chapter (or other relevant interest group) at their home institution, those underrepresented in specialty medicine, first generation medical students, and those currently enrolled in their first through third year of medical school or in research fellowship years.
If selected for an interview, you will be contacted by the NERVE leadership to set up a date and time to meet via Zoom. Membership will be granted based upon application criteria and interview after deliberation. We plan to admit 35-40 members in the upcoming cohort.
