Trainee Numbers
During 2006 Glenn McCulloch, former President of the NSA, conducted a detailed review of the workforce requirements for neurosurgery in Australia. This followed the Australian Medical Workforce Advisory Committee (AMWAC) 2000 workforce report on the supply and requirements for the neurosurgery workforce in Australia, and the later 2005 revision by AMWAC as part of the working draft report for the surgical workforce in Australia. The recommendations from the three reports for the required annual intake into the Specialist Surgical Training Program in Neurosurgery to meet future workforce requirements were:
- 7 - 8 trainees per year in Australia - McCulloch Report 2006
- 4 - 6 trainees per year in Australia - Draft AMWAC Report 2005
- 6 - 8 trainees per year in Australia - AMWAC Report 2000
It is important to note that the intake into the Training Program for Australia for the period from 2000 to 2006 inclusive has been an average of approximately 10 trainees per year exceeding all three recommendations. Using the Neurosurgical Workforce Study conducted by Glenn McCulloch, with the addition of New Zealand workforce requirements, and allowing for an attrition rate of four trainees per annual intake, the intake into SET1 training positions for the Training Program will be limited to 14 trainees per year from the 2007 selection process onward. Singapore trainees will be in addition to this quota.
The table below summarises the selection intake for the Specialist Surgical Training Program in Neurosurgery. The year shown is the year in which the selected trainees commence training. The selection process is conducted in the year prior.

The graph and data table below provides a projection of the number of trainees expected to complete the Specialist Surgical Training Program in Neurosurgery from 2005 to 2010 inclusive. This data has been produced by the Board of Neurosurgery and must not be reproduced without the written authorisation of the Board.
Workforce requirements for Neurosurgery have recently been reviewed by the Australian Medical Workforce Advisory Committee (AMWAC). Draft projections, including New Zealand, indicated that there should be approximately 5-7 trainees completing the Training Program each year to satisfy future workforce requirements.
