Specialty or Sub-Specialty Fellowship Training

Consultants and trainees wishing to spend one or two years working a fellowship position which is not part of the Specialist Surgical Training Program in Neurosurgery are not required to apply for Specialist Surgical Training. In these instances the matter should be negotiated directly between the applicant and the hospital. The Board of Neurosurgery is unable to assist in this process.

The following information is a summary of information applicable to the selection process conducted during 2007 and does not include all eligibility requirements. This information is subject to change without notice prior to the opening of selection for the 2009 intake which is conducted during 2008.

The SET Program in Neurosurgery operates in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. Applicants to the SET Program in Neurosurgery must be a graduate of a medical school recognised by the  Australian Medical Council (AMC) or the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) or have completed in its entirety the AMC or MCNZ accreditation process at the time of application. Singapore applicants must hold an MBBS degree awarded by the National University of Singapore or hold a basic medical degree from a university or medical school listed in the schedule of the Medical Registration Act ( Singapore ).

All applicants must have current and valid medical registration from the applicable Medical Board or Council in Australia , New Zealand or Singapore at the time of application. Australian applicants must have general (unconditional) registration. New Zealand applicants must have general scope registration or written assurance from the Medical Council of New Zealand that general scope registration will be approved by the start of the training year. Singapore applicants must have Provisional Registration from the Singapore Medical Council.

Recognition of Formal Postgraduate Specialist Qualifications

If you are an international medical graduate with formal postgraduate specialist qualifications, you are advised to lodge an application for assessment as a specialist through the Australian Medical Council (AMC) or the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).   Your application and documentation will be forwarded to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (the College) for a 'specialist assessment.
